Choosing to breastfeed your baby is a beautiful decision that allows you to bond on a new level with your baby. A mother’s breast milk really is the perfect food for a growing baby to help them develop properly and stay in good health.

However, one aspect of breastfeeding that isn’t always easy is feeding your baby in public or in the company of other people. You want to provide your child with the nourishment they need as quickly as possible, but without revealing too much of yourself when you aren’t in the comfort of your own home. Luckily, there are a wide variety of options available when it comes to nursing covers that allow you to feed your baby comfortably,  no matter where you are.

Let’s compare the three main options available:

  • Nursing Scarf
A nursing scarf can be almost any shape, triangular, rectangular or an infinity scarf connected all the way around. These scarves can be worn over your clothing and the larger versions may hold the baby snuggly in place while nursing. This option may leave you a bit more exposed during the feeding process (depending on how you arrange it) but can allow you to be hands-free during nursing time, which is a major bonus. They can be used as a regular scarf once you’ve moved on from breastfeeding.  These scarves generally fall in the mid range of prices.
  • Traditional Style Nursing Cover
This design is similar in shape to an apron. There is a strap that goes around your neck, often with a wire neckline to lift it away from our body, and then a flat panel that covers your torso as well as the baby. Some options will also tie or wrap around your back as well.  If you’re looking for complete coverage, this may be a good option that you can fold up and store in a diaper bag so you have it ready when your little one needs to eat. These tend to be at the bottom of the price range and are generally made from cotton.  They are available in many different colors and prints.
  • Nursing Wrap
Similar to a nursing scarf, a wrap is a much larger piece of fabric that may be circular or rectangular with or without snaps to hold it in place. These wraps may be made in a whole range of fabrics, including stretchy fabric to allow you to customize the fit. They’re definitely a stylish option that will look more like a fashionable top or accessory while still covering you and the baby almost completely. Some of them are multifunctional and can be styled in many different ways. They tend to be the most discreet, as it is not obvious that they are nursing covers. The idea is that you wear them as a stylish fashion piece, rather than store them in your diaper bag. These larger wraps generally fall in the higher range of prices, depending on the type of fabric they are made from. .

Now every mother is different, so it may take some trial and error to find the nursing cover that works best for your needs. Try different styles with different outfits and have fun with your selection. You and this cover will be spending a lot of time together so choose one that you love.

No matter which of the three nursing cover options you choose, we want you to feel empowered and confident when you feed your baby in public. You’re performing something truly magical and that is to be celebrated. Overcoming nerves about feeding in public can be challenging at first, but you’ll get to a point where it becomes so second nature you don’t give the people around you a second thought.

Full disclosure – We are the manufacturer of the Boho Mama Maternity & Breastfeeding Wrap. We think it’s great and obviously judging by the reviews, so do our customers. Our original design has been copied by many other manufacturers, but in our opinion, never bettered. Ours is generously cut and made from organic breathable soft bamboo with just 5% spandex for stretch, unlike others which use cheaper blends of fabric or simply less fabric.  In our opinion, the Boho Mama is the perfect choice for the modern stylish Mom who doesn’t want to wear an apron with a loud print on it screaming “Breastfeeding going on here!”
